Detailed Teach Grant Information The TEACH Grant provides up to $4,000 per year in grant assistance to students who plan to become teachers and teachers who are obtaining graduate degrees. 1. A full-time student may receive up to $4,000 per year. 2. The undergraduate or post-baccalaureate cumulative maximum amount is $16,000. 3. The graduate student cumulative maximum amount is $8,000. 4. If the student is enrolled less than full-time (which for TEACH is 9 hours for graduate and 12 hours for undergraduate), the annual amount of the TEACH Grant will be reduced. Three-quarter-time students can receive up to $3,000 per year; half-time students can receive up to $2,000 per year; and less-than-half-time students can receive up to $1,000 per year. TEACH Grant recipients must agree to: 1. Serve as a full-time teacher for a total of not less than 4 academic years within 8 years of completing his or her course of study. 2. Comply with the requirements for being a highly qualified teacher as defined in section 9101 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act . 3. Teach in a public or private nonprofit elementary or secondary school that is eligible for assistance under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act . 4. Teach in a critical needs field: Mathematics, Foreign Language, Science, Bilingual Education, Special Education, Reading Specialty, Early Childhood Education, Other critical needs field, as determined by Federal, State or local Government agency. 5. Provide evidence of required employment after each year of service. Information for Undergraduate Students >> Information for Graduate Students >> Important Reminder: If you receive a TEACH Grant but do not complete the required teaching service, as explained above, you will be required to repay the grants as a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant Disbursement. *TEACH Grant counseling changes for 2009-10 academic year * Beginning with the 2009-10 academic year, students must complete the Department's online initial/subsequent counseling before they can complete an Agreement to Serve (ATS), which is required before receiving a TEACH Grant. Initial or subsequent counseling sessions provided by Mapping Your Future or any other entity will not satisfy the counseling requirement. Schools may continue to use Mapping Your Future's TEACH Grant initial and subsequent counseling through the 2008-09 academic year. The date to discontinue Mapping Your Future's TEACH Grant initial and subsequent counseling session has not been determined. Schools should be sure to retrieve initial and subsequent counseling records before the counseling session is discontinued. Schools may continue to use Mapping Your Future's TEACH Grant exit counseling.
